In this edition of Swire News, we take to the skies with HK Express, Hong Kong’s only low-cost carrier (“LCC”) – and one which has been ranked among the world’s top five low-cost airlines by Airline Ratings.
HK Express is also the fastest growing airline in Asia according to aviation data specialist OAG, which cited the carrier’s addition of 11 destinations between January 2023 and January 2024, and a 65 percent increase in flight frequency.Ronald Lam, Chief Executive Officer of the Cathay group and Chair of HK Express, says the airline fulfils a vital role in the group’s dual-brand strategy.“The Cathay group’s strategy is to offer customers choice – the premium full-service experience with Cathay Pacific, and great value with HK Express,” he explains.
“This approach ensures we are able to serve the different needs of a wide range of customers…”
…He describes HK Express as “a disruptor in the region” – nimble, efficient and able to react quickly to opportunities.
The airline’s ambition is to be the best LCC in Asia. “We are agile enough to adapt,” says HK Express CEO Jeanette Mao. “If a new destination isn’t working, for whatever reason, we can change things quickly.”
Last year, HK Express introduced new fare categories to enhance flexibility and value, including the Ultra Lite fare, which rewards passengers who travel with less.Prior to the launch of the new fare categories, the airline was recording around 1,000 lost minutes per month due to delays. “Now, we’ve got it down to 100 minutes,” Jeanette says. “It’s had a very positive impact.”
HK Express has also focused on enhancing the inflight experience, such as introducing Hong Kong-style snacks on board, including curry fish balls. In 2023, nearly half a million portions were sold.The airline continues to recruit heavily, hiring nearly 1,000 new employees in 2023 – 50 percent of whom were based in the Greater Bay Area. “We are not just creating jobs in Hong Kong, but also for the wider region,” Jeanette notes.
Looking ahead, the airline will expand its fleet and routes to help support the new Three-Runway System at Hong Kong International Airport.“Together, Cathay Pacific and HK Express will operate flights to more than 100 destinations around the world within 2025,” Ronald says.

此外,HK Express 也在機上餐飲注入港式元素,如咖喱魚蛋等。2023 年共售出近 50 萬份本地小食。在人才招募上,2023 年 HK Express 聘請了近 1,000 名新員工,其中約 50% 來自大灣區地區。「我們不僅在香港創造就業,也讓區域內更多年輕人加入航空業。」
展望未來,HK Express 將擴充機隊與航點,以支援香港機場三跑道系統的啟用。「到 2025 年,國泰與 HK Express 將共同營運超過 100 個國際航點,」林紹波說。
